Hideaki Ishi (石 英明Ishi Hideaki, born July 29, 1962), better known by his stage nameDJ Krush, is a record producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of jazz and soul samples.
DJ Krush (aka Hideaki Ishi) is a 35 year-old Tokyo-based B-boy who used to be part of the 'Yakuza' Japanese gangster organization. On Milight, his fourth album.

Early life[edit]
Ishi was born in Tokyo in 1962. He dropped out of school at an early age and joined a local gang and, a few years later, the yakuza. Early in his career as a yakuza underling, Ishi discovered a severed finger wrapped in paper on his desk. Later, after discovering that it had belonged to his friend, he decided to leave the yakuza and cut ties with the criminal underworld.[1][2] Ishi was inspired to start DJing after seeing the film Wild Style in 1983.[2][3] 'When I discovered the film Wild Style in 1983 I found what I really wanted to do, to express myself,' he said in a 2015 interview. 'Breaking, grafitti [sic], rap, DJ… I always liked music so I chose DJ. My body wasn’t built for breaking, DJing was the thing for me.'[4]

Career[edit]
Aside from being considered one of the pioneers of Japanese hip hop,[5] Ishi has established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the hip hop industry, both in Japan and abroad. Upon entering the industry, Ishi, with his experimental beats and instrumental sounds, changed the face of hip-hop at a time when it was dominated by the American rap scene. He is reluctant to identify his music with any particular genre, for it would place limits on his listeners and on his talents.[6] He has been regarded as ambient, trip hop, some combination of the two, and hip hop. DJ Krush prefers to exercise an ideological distance from the genres he is usually grouped into, while maintaining a healthy appreciation for all music forms and styles.[7] Still, in general, he admits to having more affinity to the musical underground than the mainstream. 'Hip hop in Japan is divided in two parts. Mainstream and Underground,' he says. 'Underground is more interesting and I feel comfortable here.'[4]

DJ Krush's first stateside release is a fine affair; if Strictly Turntablized is the one most often raved about in the hip-hop underground with regard to his early work, that's not for this release's lack of trying. Working with a variety of his countrymen throughout, who tackle everything from guest vocals to a variety of instruments, Krush sets the late-night, smoky urban mood from the start and doesn't let up throughout. Funky beats are spare but effective, launching grooves that unfold just enough over the course of his tracks, edgy and slightly unnerving. Many of his best efforts come on brief link tracks, like 'Underneath the System,' with a queasy, drugged-out feeling that any number of trip-hop wannabes would have killed to create. While he has a definite sound and style, he also knows how to create any number of variations or twists with it, with fine results. His collaborations with vocalists and rappers show him holding back just a touch to allow them full room to breathe; it's more like he's the backing musician for them, an unexpected twist given that this is his album. 'Keeping the Motion' features sweet R&B singing and reasonably okay MC work from Monday Michiru, adding some fine sass to the affair, while Carla Vallet's multilingual spoken word breaks and softly crooned chorus on 'Murder of Soul' also has a nice bite. On the instrumental tip, his affinities to jazz are clear. The edgy, electronic burn of 'Roll and Tumble' is broken up in a neat way by Kim Shima's piano and Takeharu Hayakawa's bass. Meanwhile, both Kazufumi Kodama's calmer trumpet on the lovely, echo-heavy 'On the Dub-Bue' and Kobutaka Kuwabara's more aggressive work on 'Edge of Blue' bring to mind what Miles Davis might have done had he lived well into the '90s.
